Fortnite maker Epic Games has made an undisclosed investment in 3D technology company M-XR.
Based in London, M-XR has been developing a solution that makes it easier for brands, studios, and creators to create realistic 3D models at scale.
According to the company, the technology allows users to measure and extract real-world materials across a 3D object, delivering a photorealistic render when the asset is place into a real-time engine.
MX-R will use the investment to expand its team and bolster its 3D production solutions as demand for virtual world building grows. The deal will also facilitate further collaboration between M-XR and Quixel, a scan library owned by Epic Games.
"In order for virtual worlds to scale and content to flourish we need to solve 3D production bottlenecks. Over the past 30 years innovations in computer graphics and computation have surpassed expectations. However, the 3D file format hasn’t really evolved or changed," said Ryan Howell, CEO of M-XR.
"Currently the bar for producing a realistic 3D asset or experience is incredibly high, almost exclusive to teams of highly skilled 3D artists who possess the relevant skills and experience. In order for us to build enough variety for these existing and emerging mediums we must develop tools that empower new and existing stakeholders to creatively explore new mediums without the hindrance of time or cost."
M-XR had previously received a MegaGrant from Epic to develop its 3D capture methodology.
